Aria Giovanni attended UCSD for several years, waitressing and tutoring in science and mathematics on the side, when she decided modelling might be an easier way to make good money. She started answering newspaper ads in October, 1999, and soon began appearing on various amateur pornography websites such as Amateur Pink, Busty Amateurs, Seductive Amateurs, and BubbleGirls. In 2000, Aimee Sweet introduced Aria Giovanni to glamour photographer Suze Randall, who in late May of that year shot photos of Aria Giovanni which appeared in the September issue of Penthouse magazine.
